This article explains how to sign in to Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) to access email, files, and applications such as Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
What you need before you start
To log in, you will need:
Your work email address (for example: your.name@company.co.uk)
Your Microsoft 365 password
Access to your mobile phone or authentication app (if multi‑factor authentication is enabled)
If you do not have these details, contact your internal IT team or raise a support request.
Step‑by‑step: Logging in to Microsoft 365
- Open a web browser (Edge, Chrome, or Safari are recommended).
- Go to https://www.office.com
- Select Sign in.
- Enter your work email address, then select Next.
- Enter your password, then select Sign in.
- If prompted, complete multi‑factor authentication (MFA):
- Approve the sign‑in on your phone, or
- Enter the code shown in your authenticator app.
Once signed in, you’ll see the Microsoft 365 home page with access to Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and other apps.
Logging in for the first time
If this is your first time signing in:
- You may be prompted to change your password.
- You may be asked to set up multi‑factor authentication (for example, Microsoft Authenticator).
- Follow the on‑screen instructions fully before continuing.
Common sign‑in problems
I’ve forgotten my password
- On the sign‑in page, select Forgot my password and follow the prompts.
- If you cannot reset it yourself, contact your IT administrator.
I can’t sign in, but my password is correct
This may be due to:
- A locked account
- An expired password
- A missing or failed MFA step
Wait a few minutes and try again. If the issue continues, log a support request.
I keep getting asked to approve sign‑ins
This usually means multi‑factor authentication is enabled. This is expected behaviour and helps keep your account secure.
Signing out or switching accounts
To sign out:
- Select your profile icon (top‑right corner).
- Choose Sign out.
To switch accounts, sign out completely, then sign back in using the correct email address.
